Can someone help me with the setup of my new iPod?

It's Christmas, and for Christmas I got the Sixth Generation iPod Shuffle with the touch screen. I already had a different iPod (unsure what generation, it was the thin square iPod, not the rectangle, it was a square), and when I plugged it in it showed up on the side as "Mel's iPod". My new one, I plug in, a box shows up and says something along the lines of "and iPod was detected but cannot be identified." Can someone help me with this? What do I do?
